David is the patron of both Headway Essex and AICR. You can find out more about the work they do below:

The Association for International Cancer Research

David got involved with The Association For International Cancer Research as he was filming the third annual Doctor Who Christmas special. He made the commitment after he heard of the ground-breaking work the charity funds around the world.
David says: “I know only too well that cancer strikes without regard to age or race, country or creed, fame or fortune. I believe AICR’s approach to funding research, wherever in the world it is taking place, is at the forefront of the battle to bring cancer under control and I am proud to have been asked to become a patron.”
Chief Executive, Norman Barrett is delighted that David accepted the invitation to help raise awareness of the charity and its research. “Cancer claims the lives of hundreds of thousands of people across the globe every year. Yet work undertaken by AICR and others is making a difference in identifying the causes and the new treatments that will make a difference. As The Doctor, David is expert at fighting threats to mankind: we hope his support will help us in the biggest medical fight we face – the fight against cancer.”

Headway Essex

David was first introduced to everyone at Headway Essex whilst researching his role in the BBC drama Recovery.
Joanna Wright the director of Headway Essex says:
"David spent time at our Day Centre researching the leading role in the BBC drama "Recovery". We were thrilled when he agreed to be patron of Headway Essex, and we are doubly thrilled that he has undergone writer’s cramp to personally sign greeting cards which we can sell to raise much needed funds to help us provide care and support for people with brain injury and those who care for them."
David says:

"I am absolutely delighted to be able to help Headway raise the profile of brain injury. While researching my role in Recovery, I spent time at Headway Essex where I observed some of the group sessions as well as chatting to some of the members. It was a truly humbling experience. There was so much hope, humour and positivity, mixed with occasional anger and sadness.

"It was a very powerful experience, seeing first-hand the effects brain injuries can have on people. It made me realise just how lucky I am and brings fresh meaning to the phrase 'there but for the grace of God go I'. Headway is a wonderful organisation and one I am only too happy to help."
