TENNANT LOOKS BACK ON OSBOURNE

Date:  2016

Character:  Himself
Production: BBC Radio 4

Sixty years ago, one small play shocked British theatre to its core and started a cultural revolution. John Osborne, a writer from an unfashionable Midlands city, put ordinary lives on stage and made them an extraordinary comment on post-war Britain. As he prepares to star in a new production for Radio 4, David Tennant explores John Osborne's own papers to uncover how he put his own life and relationships into Look Back in Anger.

Along the way, we look back at the anger which greeted the play from many critics. The BBC's theatre critic Ivor Brown called it, "unspeakably dirty and squalid. It is difficult to believe that a colonel's daughter, brought up with some standards, would have stayed in this sty for a day." He went on to fume, "I felt angry because it wasted my time." He was one of many who hated the play.

David Tennant hears interviews with John Osborne, reads his personal letters, as well as archive of critic Kenneth Tynan and director Tony Richardson. He also plays extracts from previous productions, including a classic with Richard Burton as Jimmy Porter.

LOOK BACK IN ANGER

Date:  2016

Character:  Jimmy Porter
Production: BBC Radio 4

To celebrate sixty years since John Osborne wrote his classic play, Look Back In Anger, Richard Wilson directs a new radio dramatisation with David Tennant as Jimmy Porter. The play that launched the Angry Young Man movement has lost none of its bite and still disturbs and questions in equal measure.

Jimmy Porter, lower middle-class, university-educated, lives with his wife Alison, the daughter of a retired Colonel in the British Army in India. His friend Cliff Lewis, who helps Jimmy run a sweet stall, lives with them. Jimmy, intellectually restless and thwarted, reads the papers, argues and taunts his friends over their acceptance of the world around them. He rages to the point of violence, reserving much of his bile for Alison's friends and family. The situation is exacerbated by the arrival of Helena, an actress friend of Alison's from school. Appalled at what she finds, Helena calls Alison's father to take her away from the flat. He arrives while Jimmy is visiting the mother of a friend and takes Alison away. As soon as she has gone, Helena moves in with Jimmy. Alison returns to visit, having lost Jimmy's baby. Helena can no longer stand living with Jimmy and leaves. Finally Alison returns to Jimmy and his angry life.

PETER AND THE WOLF AND JAZZ!

Date:  2015

Character:  Narrator

Narrator David Tennant invites you to share in a strange and wonderful adventure: a jazz big band adaptation of Prokofiev's famous tale. Jazz instruments take the place of the classical orchestra in this innovative adaption and in addition The Amazing Keystone Orchestra introduce listeners to the sound of the big band and to the history of jazz. The booklet relates the story in a series of magnificently realised illustrations (by Martin Jarrie). Commissioned by the Festival Jazz a Vienne where it was first performed on June 28th 2012, this 'non-classical' Peter and the Wolf aimed to introduce children to all forms of jazz. In 1936 the composer of Ivan the Terrible offered an introduction to the instruments of the classical orchestra. Three-quarters of a century later, this new recording allows listeners to explore the sounds of a big band, along with the history of jazz and improvisation through its evolution and its various genres. This artistic initiative uses a formation very close to the typical Duke Ellington band: 2 alto saxes, 2 tenors, 1 baritone, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets and the rhythm section made up of the only strings in the group: piano, double bass and guitar. The only addition to this classic big band line up, indispensible for the bird, is the flute and, replacing the fourth bass trombone, the tuba.

They "meet" when Emmi mistakenly sends an e-mail to Leo's inbox. A romance ensues that allows them to live out a shared secret life far removed from their day-to-day existences. But to what extent does it rely on fantasy and escapism, and will it survive a real-life meeting?

The problem is...Emmi (a modern Madame Bovary) is married....

Have email, Facebook, texting and the like created a generation of isolated young people who prefer to communicate remotely - who may be in fact afraid to engage in face to face contact to find love? Is it possible to fall in love with someone you've never met? Does a virtual affair 'count' as adultery? What are the implications of the fact that we can pretend to be anyone in cyberspace?

TALES OF HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN

Date:  2011

Character:  Narrator

Production: BBC Learning

David Tennant reads an adaptation of 'The brave Tin Soldier' by Hans Christian Andersen

Twenty-five toy soldiers are made from an old tin spoon. They are all alike except for one, which was last to be made. He has only one leg, because they ran out of tin, but stands as straight as his brothers.

The soldiers are a birthday present for a little boy. The boy stands them on a table with other toys, one of which is a pretty dancer made of paper. The one-legged soldier falls in love with the dancer but doesn't tell her. He thinks she will be too grand for him as she lives in a castle, while he lives in a box.

One night a goblin jumps out of a jack-in-the-box. He warns the soldier that he shouldn’t wish for what doesn't belong to him and should wait to see what happens in the morning.

When morning comes the boy puts the soldier on the window sill. He is blown out of the open window. He's found by some other boys and when it starts to rain he's put into a paper boat and washed down a drain. A rat tries to make him pay a toll. Then he plunges into a canal and is eaten by a fish. The fish is caught and sold at market and then taken to the house where the soldier began his journey. The soldier is found when the fish is cut open.

The soldier is put back with his brothers but one of the other children, perhaps having been put up to it by the goblin, throws him on the fire. A gust of wind then blows the paper dancer onto the fire and she is immediately consumed by flames. The soldier melts into a lump of heart-shaped tin.
